Children’s Hospital at Fitzsimons

September 21st, 2007 · No Comments

One of our many clients asked me why Children’s Hospital is moving from its center Denver location to the Fitzsimons Campus? Great question. To answer this question we need a short history review. Fitzsimons Army Medical Center closed as a military hospital in the mid 1990’s, and the property was delivered to University of Colorado and the City of Aurora in 1999. The University began moving the Health Sciences Center to the new campus in 2001. CU completed moving their teaching hospital and research facilities in 2007. The simple reason CU moved to the new campus was space. CU’s old facility at 9th and Colorado simply had no more room.

Which brings us to Children’s Hospital. As the regions largest medical teaching hospital, The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center has a close relationship with Children’s Hospital in the instruction of physicians. CU’s move east was one of the reasons Children’s needed to move, to stay close to the teaching facility. The other reason was the same issue confronting CU- space. The old Children’s Hospital facility was no longer capable of supporting the growth occurring at the hospital.

Of course as a really big bonus, Children’s Hospital in Denver now has an incredible new facility to treat children. Which is really the point.
